Dr Achala Gupta awarded the prestigious 2025 Professor M. N. Srinivas Memorial Prize

Congratulations to Dr Achala Gupta, Associate Professor of Sociology of Education, on the award of the prestigious 2025 Professor M. N. Srinivas Memorial Prize by the Indian Sociological Society (ISS).

This prize is awarded annually for outstanding sociological/social anthropological work. It commemorates Professor M.N. Srinivas (1916-1999), a foundational figure in Indian sociology, widely known for his work on caste and caste systems, social stratification, Sanskritisation and Westernisation in southern India and the concept of ‘Dominant Caste’.

The prize was formally presented to her at the 50th All India Sociological Conference in Andhra Pradesh (28-30 December 2025) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to sociology, which was also featured in Re:Action Summer 2025 issue.

In her acceptance speech, she extended her “heartfelt thanks to the Indian Sociological Society and the selection committee for this incredible recognition” and added that “Professor Srinivas’s legacy continues to inspire generations of sociologists, like myself, and to be associated with his name through this prize is truly humbling.”

After its announcement at the ISS conference, this news was shared widely at local, regional and national newspapers in India, thus enhancing the university’s reputation for research excellence.

Dr Achala Gupta was recently awarded the distinguished 2025 Hans L Zetterberg prize in Sociology for her scholarly contributions.
