Southampton Sport awarded CUBO Award for Excellence in Student Experience

Southampton Sport is proud to announce that they have been awarded the CUBO Award for Excellence in Student Experience as result of their Active for All strategy, alongside recent developments to participation opportunities at the University of Southampton.

The CUBO award is a national recognition of an outstanding university initiative that has significantly improved students’ experience of sport and physical activity. Receiving the award for Excellence in Student Experience accredits Southampton’s ability to increase student participation, support health and wellbeing, improve sporting performance, and deliver innovative and inclusive opportunities for students to engage in sport.

The team have been working hard to build long-term, sustainable changes and pathways to embed sport at all levels into university life and culture. Through the creation of the Performance Pathway Model for high-performing student athletes, down to Give It A Go and Learn 2 programmes for those looking for entry-level opportunities, the changes made have ensured that everybody has an opportunity to be active.

Seeing Southampton Sport to win this award, against other highly recognised sporting universities, is a huge achievement.

Adam French, Sales and Partnership Manager said:

We’ve created a university-wide performance ecosystem where every student, regardless of background, demographic or ability, has a clear pathway into sport and physical activity, from participation through to performance. Winning this award was an amazing way to finish the academic year.

Oliver King, University Student said:

Southampton University Men’s Rugby have worked closely with Southampton Sport to deliver the first Southampton Showcase, creating a student-led platform to connect and raise the profile of sporting clubs and societies. The event strengthened student voice and engagement, helping build a more connected and inclusive sporting culture across the University.

Southampton Sport has seen an 85% increase in Give It A Go attendees, an 11% increase in active participation across the student community and a 64% increase in female participation.

To see the impact of their work being recognised nationally, as they enter year two of the five-year Active for all strategy, is a major success.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
