Transforming the Future: Building 32 reimagined for ECS innovation
After two years of planning and development, the project to repurpose levels 3 and 4 of Building 32 has officially reopened its doors, unveiling a state-of-the-art transformation that marks a new era for the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). This ambitious refurbishment project, spearheaded and managed by the Faculty and ECS and made possible through project management support and funding from Estates & Facilities, was delivered on time and under budget, with construction completed in just 16 weeks.
At the heart of the upgrade is a cutting-edge 100-person lab designed to support the new undergraduate Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence programmes. This refurbished space is not only a hub for learning but also a launchpad for innovation, equipped to accommodate both undergraduate and postgraduate research projects. One of the standout features is the dedicated drone practice area—an exceptional facility that is unique in South East England. A dedicated Robotics Lab on level three further enhances the hands-on learning experience for students. These spaces position ECS at the forefront of emerging technologies. The lab also hosts the WellLab, which explores how digital tools can be crafted to enhance everyday health practices, further enriching the research and innovation environment.
Staff and students alike will benefit from improved office spaces, enhanced PhD and research lab areas, and flexible breakout and meeting rooms. These spaces are equipped with the latest AV technology, including magnetic display screens and controlled lighting, fostering collaboration and innovation throughout the space. This refurbishment is more than just a facelift—it’s a strategic investment in the future of ECS, supporting cutting-edge research, dynamic teaching, and a vibrant academic community.
