Samantha Ege becomes Fellow of the Royal College of Music

Many congratulations to Dr Samantha Ege, Lecturer in Music, who was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music (FRCM) at the end of 2025 in recognition of her services to music.
Past FRCM recipients include Sir Edward Elgar (1924), Sir Paul McCartney (1995), and Nicola Benedetti MBE (2014). Dr Ege’s award was approved by the RCM’s patron, King Charles III, who historically conferred the awards before becoming King. Lord Black of Brentwood conferred her award in his place and Dame Janet Baker (pictured left) gave a speech at the ceremony.
Dr Ege’s research encompasses the Afro-British Victorian composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, who studied at the RCM in the late 19th century. His experiences were varied, encountering immense support from professors but also racism from students.
Dr Ege commented: “When I learned I would be getting this award, I couldn’t help but think of Coleridge-Taylor and the long history of Black British classical musicians who never received their due recognition. I am currently working on several interconnected Coleridge-Taylor projects, including an AHRC IAA application and a book, so the timing of this award is very special”.
