Dr Vanissa Wanick contributes to Royal Society Report on Science and Society
Dr Vanissa Wanick of the Winchester School of Art has contributed to the Royal Society’s Science for Society report, a landmark national study exploring how science and society can better shape and support one another.
The report brings together experts from academia, education, museums, industry, policy, and public engagement to examine the role of science in society and to develop recommendations for strengthening public participation in scientific research and innovation. The Royal Society emphasises that public engagement is an essential component of the research lifecycle and should be properly recognised, supported, and rewarded across the UK research system.

Vanissa contributed as a member of the Informal Engagement with Science working group, representing the UK Young Academy. Her contribution drew on expertise in interaction design, serious games, participatory methods, and creative approaches to public engagement. The working group examined how people engage with science through museums, festivals, community initiatives, creative practice, and other informal settings, particularly at a time when many of these opportunities face increasing pressures.
This contribution is particularly significant because it demonstrates how creative and design-led approaches can play an important role in national conversations about research culture, public trust, and participation. It also reflects Winchester School of Art’s growing contribution to interdisciplinary research that connects creativity, civic engagement, and societal impact.
The report’s recommendations will help inform future discussions about how researchers, institutions, and policymakers can work with communities to build stronger and more inclusive relationships between science and society.
