Over the past month:
- Professor Samuele Cortese’s paper, warning that far from being over diagnosed, people with ADHD are waiting too long for assessment, support and treatment, was covered by the Press Association. It also featured in the Independent, Daily Mail, the Sun , ITV News, STV, the Express (print), and the Southern Daily Echo. Read our press release.
- Dr Chloe Griffin and Professor Thomas Gernon’s work on ‘Snowball Earth’ was picked up by The Guardian, BBC’s Newsround, Indian TV station News Nine, Economic Times, part of the Times of India, WDCTV in the US and Earth.com. It was the seventh most ‘deeply read’ article and most viewed ‘In Science’ article in The Guardian on the day of publication. Read our press release.
- Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark E. Smith and SUSU President Emma Brown spoke to the Southern Daily Echo at a topping out ceremony of our new flagship teaching and learning building, B75. Read our press release.
- Our researchers behind pioneering railway advancements met the King and Queen to receive the highest national institutional honour, the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Higher and Further Education, in recognition of their work. The honour was covered by Rail Business Daily, Southern Daily Echo and Business South. Professor William Powrie also wrote a three-page thought-leadership feature in relation to the prize in Rail Director magazine. Read our press release.
- Professor Andrew Atherton and some of our international students featured in a report by global news agency Reuters in a story highlighting our new campus in Delhi. This was also was picked up by other titles including Deccan Chronicle, Business Standard, The Hindu Business, The Sen Times, NDTV, Economic Times Education and MSN India.
- Leo Mickelm and Professor Blair Thornton’s research into a robotic wing that senses and adapts to changing water currents ran in The Engineer, Interesting Engineering and Bioengineer. Read our press release.

- Professor Jon Copley was the subject of a Sky News feature on being a marine biologist. The article was also carried by Smooth Radio, Heart FM and more than 20 other local radio station websites. Jon also talked to BBC Science Focus about bioluminescence for an article on mysteries of the oceans.
- Dr Neil Gostling featured in the Southern Daily Echo and was interviewed on BBC Radio Solent about his part in new Netflix series The Dinosaurs. Read our press release.

- Professor Steve Beeby was interviewed by Newstalk (Irish radio) about e-textiles and wearable tech.
- Dame Wendy Hall’s comments on gender imbalance in AI, made during the recent India AI summit, were picked up by the Daily Mail and other titles. She was also interviewed live from the country by BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. In a separate interview, Dame Wendy told BBC Radio Solent the threat that AI will take jobs is “way overhyped” and it will bring benefit to our lives and work.
- Professor Joel Smethurst spoke to BBC Online about landslips at Blackgang Chine on the Isle of Wight.
- Dr Heather Browning took part in a panel discussion on zoos on BBC Radio 4’s Rare Earth and was interviewed on US public radio about whether crustaceans feel pain.
- Dr Ben Littlefield featured in the Southern Daily Echo speaking about the link between the University and the Spitfire, and its role in inspiring future generations. The paper photographed our students at Southampton’s 90-year celebratory event.
- Professor Denise Baden spoke to the Daily Mail about how hairdressers can help tackle climate change.
- Professor Andrew Serdy was quoted in an article about the geopolitics of the global ocean treaty in the Financial Times.
- Dr David Evans spoke to CBC radio (Canada) about his research into the 66-million-year-old mystery of how our planet transformed from a tropical greenhouse to the ice-capped world of today. Read our press release.
- Professor Will Jennings told Times Radio Labour’s defeat in the recent by-election would be terminal for Number 10’s strategy to try to appeal to right-leaning voters in a way that alienates its core.
- Professor Stephen Holgate spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Inside Health programme about a new wave of research into ME, which is hoping to bring clarity to the condition.
- Dr Valerie Brandt was quoted in a The Guardian explainer on Tourette Syndrome following the Bafta awards ceremony.
- Dr Franklin Nobrega was quoted in an Express article about 5,000-year-old antibiotic resistant bacteria.
- Professor Claire Foster was quoted in the Independent about research linking mental health to the risk of death in cancer patients, echoing the views she provided on the National Cancer Plan here
- Professor Matt Loxham’s comments on how air pollution may affect the brain, particularly in people who have suffered a stroke, ran in The Sun.
- Professor Peter Kazansky featured in New Scientist in an article about data centres of the future storing information on glass.
- Professor Philip Calder spoke to the Daily Mail about who can benefit most from multivitamins.
- Professor Matt Middleton was on BBC World Service programme CrowdScience talking about the properties of light waves.
- Professor Gopal Ramchurn was interviewed by BBC World News about AI chatbots.
- Dr Victoria Goss was quoted by the BBC about a new trial into whether specialist medical tampons could improve early diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
- Dr Vasilis Strogilos was quoted in Schools Week on SEND provision in schools.
- Professor Ian Williams was interviewed by BBC Wales about the Sea Empress oil tanker disaster 30 years ago.
- Dr Michael Head was quoted in an article in The Sun about Chikungunya – a virus transmitted by mosquitos.
- Professor Rob Johns spoke to BBC Wales about political homelessness.
- Professor Alex Dickinson was quoted in a Daily Mail article about a shortage of bone cement and spoke to Sky News.

- PhD student Shelley Walls’s part in a project to help create app avatars to teach Royal Navy and Royal Marines recruits how to move better and avoid injury was covered by Forces News.
- Professor Mark Stoyle spoke to BBC Radio Solent about the origins of superstition around Friday the 13th.
- Dr Adrien Allorant and Dr John Dagpunar commented on a piece in the Telegraph about COVID rates peaking ahead of lockdown.
- Dr Claire Hart’s study into the effects of phone snubbing, known as ‘pubbing’, on relationships, was covered by Austrian daily newspaper Der Standard. Read our press release.
