Recognition for Dr Clàudia Soriano-Guerrero’s planetary research
Congratulations to Dr Clàudia Soriano-Guerrero, postdoctoral researcher in the School of Physics and Astronomy, who has been awarded the Physics Science Award (in honour of Montserrat Casas) by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans’ Science and Technology Section in recognition of her PhD thesis MHD atmospheric simulations of hot Jupiters to study non-ideal effects and turbulence.

The Premi Sant Jordi de Ciències Físiques is a triennial award granted by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans to recognise outstanding doctoral theses and research contributions in the field of physical sciences. The award recognised Clàudia’s doctoral research at the Institut de Ciències de l’Espai (ICE-CSIC), which focused on the study of magnetic effects in exoplanet atmospheres. Using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations, she investigated how magnetic fields interact with atmospheric flows in hot Jupiters and how these interactions can affect the dynamics and long-term evolution of these planets.
Clàudia commented: “Receiving the Premi Sant Jordi is particularly meaningful because it recognises several years of work, dedication and perseverance. Research often involves long-term efforts whose impact is not always immediately visible, so it is very encouraging to know that someone has taken the time to value and acknowledge that work. I hope this recognition can also inspire other young researchers to pursue their goals with curiosity, determination and confidence.”
Clàudia is currently a Research Fellow in the Planetary Climate Physics Group at UoS. Her research focuses on the atmospheric dynamics and climate of planets and exoplanets using global circulation models (GCMs). She studies how atmospheric circulation transports energy across different types of planets, helping us to better understand the diversity of worlds beyond our Solar System.
